The Therapeutic Horticulture (TH) programme at Martineau Gardens helps vulnerable adults with a range of often complex support needs – many of whom join us with very low life satisfaction scores – to improve their mental health and wellbeing through participating in regular, group gardening sessions and other outdoor activities. Closely supervised, the volunteers look after the two and a half acres of organically maintained gardens and all its wildlife. The programme allows them to connect with nature, as well as other people. Our site is amongst the most attractive and ecologically diverse in South Birmingham, and we largely have the TH volunteers to thank for this. In our most recent impact evaluation, volunteers on the programme reported significant improvements in their scores for life satisfaction and other areas of life that contribute to wellbeing.
