Birmingham Back to Backs

The project resulted in an exhibition highlighting the parallels of residents who were moved out of back-to-back housing in the late 1960s and those being rehomed from tower blocks in Druids Heath as part of a regeneration programme. Artist Jayne Murray from Place Prospectors has worked with the community over 3 years to follow people’s experiences of being rehoused from the Tower Blocks. The exhibition – Moving Stories – shares the story of what’s happening to social housing and the experiences of those living through it. The work highlights the emotional, health & social impact of a large-scale regeneration process.

The project ran from June 2024 until February 2025, with 7950 people visiting the space. We also ran a series of events including a film screening, a curator’s tour of the exhibition and a walking tour of Druids Heath. The exhibition and programme of events aimed to raise awareness of the stories of the residents of Druids Heath, and the wider issues with a lack of social housing. Engagement through the comments and evaluation forms show how deeply our visitors engaged with the

stories, and the issues discussed through the artwork.

The project has also resulted in a longer term partnership between NT Back to Backs and Moving Stories, with more community events and discussions on housing planned in the coming year.
