Kate DeRight

Kate is a socially engaged artist whose practice is collaborative, seeking to amplify the voices of those who are less frequently heard and using art as a means of creating a more egalitarian, inclusive society through playful challenge, audience autonomy, and the opportunity to try out new ways of being together. She is most usually a performance maker; for the last six years, Spectra, a neuro-diverse, multi-sensory, immersive performance company that she founded and directs, has been the main focus of her work.

I am thrilled to have been awarded a Feeney Fellowship and will be using the time and resource afforded by the programme to explore my practice both in and outside of Spectra through discussion and reflection with a coach; to absorb inspiration, deepen my knowledge of instillation art and challenge my hesitations about technology through conversations with artists and curators at visits to UK galleries, the Berlin Biennial, and Ars Electronica; and to develop my making and communication skills through training in molecular gastronomy, perfumery and drawing. Towards the end of my fellowship, I will produce a small event, which will consolidate and provide insight into my learning - and may also lead onto a larger endeavour.
In the most basic terms, I am an artist because I want to change the world for the better and I think creating art is my most effective means of achieving that goal. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity the fellowship gives me to deepen my creative power and the impact of my work in Birmingham and beyond.
